O.C. Register - "Sanchez discusses education during Chapman summit"

By Dave Holscher
April 6, 2010

On March 30, Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez and a distinguished panel of experts convened at Chapman University's Argyros School of Business and Economics to address Education Solutions 2010 for California and the nation.

In her keynote presentation, Sanchez discussed the value of establishing performance standards and measurements through the No Child Left Behind program, but pointed out a lack of funding to implement improvements as a significant shortfall.

Panelists also observed that adherence to the program is hampering individual teachers in adapting their efforts to local and individual needs. Sanchez described frustration at the local level, as school districts continue to experience budget cuts that increase parental concerns, yet funding decisions are beyond local control. She also noted two legislative initiatives needed to help address the education crisis, the Elementary and Secondary Education Act and the U.S. and World Education Act, which she authored.

The Hill – “Sanchez hammers Vietnam for alleged cyberattacks on human rights leaders”

By Tony Romm
April 1, 2010

Rep. Loretta Sanchez (D-Calif.) on Wednesday hammered the Vietnamese government for allegedly hacking the e-mail accounts of thousands of local human rights activists.

The congresswoman, who chairs the House Armed Services subcommittee that chiefly handles cybersecurity issues, said she was "outraged by reports that Vietnam's government has been using the Internet as a weapon against its own people."

Sanchez later said she had applied on Tuesday for a visa to visit Vietnam, specifically in response to this week's incident. The congresswoman promised to travel to the Asian state in the coming months "to meet with human rights activists to get their side of the story" and press the state's Ministry of Information and Communications to "personally condemn these recent cyberattacks."

“Time and time again, President Nguyen Minh Triet has proven he will stop at nothing to silence critics of his regime and shut down the free flow of information and communication in Vietnam," she said Wednesday.

"He and his government have taken steps to block access to a number of websites, including Facebook and other popular Internet forums, in the form of denial-of-service attacks," she continued. "This is unacceptable conduct from a country that wants to be an international political player, especially one that has promised to adhere to basic human rights standards and the rule of law."

By Jennifer Karmarkar
March 15, 2010

The chance to meet and greet Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez (D-47) and Fullerton Mayor Pro Tem Pam Keller brought around 100 people to a campaign kickoff in the Maple neighborhood of Fullerton March 13.

Both candidates used the opportunity to talk about the issues facing residents, register new voters and canvas the 3-square-block neighborhood just east of Harbor Boulevard.

Sanchez has served the 47th Congressional District for seven terms. Keller was elected to the city council for her first four-year term in 2006. Both are up for re-election in November.

Fullerton City Council member Sharon Quirk-Silva attended to lend support to both candidates, saying that it was exciting to hold the event in the Maple neighborhood.

“It’s a very established neighborhood with longtime residents and that’s the way these campaigns are won,” she said. She added that Sanchez likes to make sure that the residents are involved and that they have a voice.

Susie Dittmar, 47, lives in the Maple neighborhood and attended the event with her sister, Jill.
